PTM journey - ‘T’eacher edition

“Time and tide wait for none,” was the concluding line by one of our students, after her presentation on the concept of time, in the recent Science and Math fest. In fact, when we completed the year end PTM for this academic year for parents of two classes, we felt the same. Already one year has passed! With all the topsy-turvy ride we had with the children—sometimes a smooth sail, most times a challenging expedition.

The PTM discussion revolved around the child’s medical, behavioral, social, emotional, and therapeutic aspects, along with their academic achievements and challenges, parents also sharing about booking a BMW car and their planned vacations, expressing their happiness. There was not much inhibition in sharing their challenges, strategies, goals, and dreams; We with parents – rejoiced in discussing the tangible progress seen in the children, deliberated on the strategies needed to achieve better results, pondered over what could be done to alleviate the difficulties faced by the child, and accepted a few things that seemed beyond our control.

Happy parents who have accepted their child with his/her abilities are now focusing mainly on what needs to be done to make the child independent. On the other side, there are parents who are still trying very hard to accept and modify their approaches to make their and their child’s lives better. Some parents also shared the occasional need for them to become ‘helicopter parents ‘ … Could see the live examples of ‘Acceptance brings clarity!’

We also heard a parent say, “If you could place my child in a better environment, he would do better,” and another parent comparing his child to “normal children.” They were gently nudged to alter their thoughts and words.

The common factor was, “my child likes school, she doesn’t like to stay at home.”
It felt humbling when a parent repeatedly said, “my child is safe here, before I reach out to her in an emergency, teachers are already there to take care of her.” Another parent said, “I will open a Nandini Milk Parlour in my child’s name to make him independent.” It was lovely to see few mothers looking relaxed and smiling…These, are our Eureka moments.

The BET team’s consistent perseverance has helped all children to progress across all areas. The umpteen strategies developed, documented, coordinated with parents, therapists and doctors has brought in this outcome.

Collaborative efforts between parents and teachers are pivotal in creating an enriched educational experience that nurtures the child’s overall growth and success. By working together, we ensure a supportive environment where the child can flourish holistically.
