Empowered Beyond the Home: My Journey with Brindavan Education Trust

Life has a beautiful way of surprising us, and sometimes, the most unexpected opportunities can lead to profound personal growth. In my case, the turning point came when I joined Brindavan Education Trust. A few years ago, rather a decade ago, I was a dedicated homemaker, fully engrossed in the responsibilities that came with managing a household- a joint family. Little did I know that this transition to the Special Education field would open doors to a new chapter in my life – one of empowerment, growth, and self-discovery.

The decision to step into the world of education was initially fuelled by a desire to contribute to the community and make a positive impact on young minds. But the apprehensions were many – Will I be able to? Can I, after all these years of being a homemaker??? And a thousand other thoughts of self-doubt crept up.

Now this would perhaps sound rather silly to you as I narrate it.

Just the day before I had to decide to enrol for the course, I had a sleepless night with all my fears. The next morning, my eyes fell on the little Krishna in our Pooja room. A bell rang in my mind, and suddenly the name ‘Brindavan’ awakened me! Yes! Of course! Brindavan! What a coincidence! The little Krishna, the child from Brindavan, the name of the course- ‘Brindavan SLD Course,’ and the children at Brindavan School – seemed to be beckoning me!!! Surprisingly, all doubts, all apprehensions melted away. No second thoughts! The decision was made!

Little did I realize that this decision would not only fulfil that purpose but also ignite a passion within me that I never knew existed.

The motto of Brindavan Education Trust – Diversity , Acceptance and Inclusion , and the school with its progressive and inclusive approach to teaching, provided me with the platform to explore my capabilities beyond the confines of my previous role as a homemaker . One of the most empowering aspects of being associated with Brindavan is the emphasis on professional development. The mentors appreciate the unique perspectives and potential of every individual, and encourage their continuous learning. They literally push us out of our comfort zones- whether it is giving a presentation, organising a field trip or a fest, or speaking to parents at a PTM. For me, there were many a ‘first times’, and I remember how each time I used to shy away, but yet, was thrown into the daunting waters to fumble, and then slowly swim my way up; to emerge with a new skill!

Not only this, what I particularly like about the culture at Brindavan is the uninhibited sharing of ideas, strategies and materials and the cheerful spirit of the entire team. The whole school set up is full of positivity, cheerful laughter and constant empowerment, a happy happy place for all – children and educators, to bloom and flourish!

I appreciate the liberty we are given to try out new strategies that flash out of the blue, and the immense acknowledgement when something works. It sure does wonders to lift one’s mind and spirit and has urged me to deliver more, and to the best of my ability. The culture here, is of transparency, sharing and learning from one another; be it sharing of ideas, thoughts, strategies of what worked, what didn’t, and what could perhaps work with the extremely diverse set of children that we have. I love the dedication and passion with which each of us work here!

One of the challenges I initially anticipated was balancing my responsibilities at home with my newfound career. Surprisingly, Brindavan not only acknowledged the importance of work-life balance but actively supports us in achieving it. Flexible working hours, understanding colleagues, and a compassionate co-ordinators team have been instrumental in helping me navigate the delicate balance between my professional and personal responsibilities. This support has motivated me to deliver my best, without compromising the harmony of my home life.

My journey with Brindavan Education Trust has been truly transformative, propelling me beyond the role of a homemaker to a confident and empowered educator. Brindavan has indeed given me a new identity as a Special Educator. The school’s commitment to professional development, inclusive culture, and support for work-life balance has not only shaped a career for me, but has empowered me to embrace my individuality, proving that it is never too late to embark on a journey of self-discovery and professional fulfilment. I am immensely grateful for the self-advocacy and confidence it has instilled in me.

My sincere thanks and gratitude to each and every person at Brindavan who has played a role in this beautiful journey.
