Overview

Support group is a place for people to give and receive emotional and practical support and also to exchange information. Parents need support from each other to cope with the challenges while parenting their child with special needs and also to bring out the best in their children.

Keeping this in mind Brindavan Parent support group (PSG) was started way back in 2000. The two great achievements of this group are: firstly, parents collaborated and saw to it that the Karnataka PU board included SLD in the specially-abled category. Secondly, PSG was instrumental in getting the second language exemption for specially-abled in Karnataka PU course.

The Brindavan parent support group meets once a month on second Saturdays between 10.30 and 12 noon. These meetings are addressed by Resource persons having expertise in different fields. Two half a day workshops are held in a year.  Once in 2/3 years Education and vocational fair is organised.

Brindavan PSG has now spread its wings by including other non-Brindavan parents into its fold. Membership amount of Rs. 1000/ is collected as annual subscription from non-Brindavan Parents and Rs. 500/ from Brindavan Parents.

Every year two parents each from junior, senior and vocational centres are selected as volunteers. They are guided and supported by teacher, coordinator and co-coordinator of the PSG.

The Brindavan Parents’ Support Group embodies the ethos and philosophy of the school – non-judgmental emotional support along with practical advice and valuable resources. It provides a unique forum that equips parents to help their children meet multiple challenges to reach their full potential in a world that can be bewilderingly competitive and ruthless.

Brindavan PSG has given me the guidance and courage to embark on the journey from Denial to Empowerment.
The monthly sessions and the friendships we forge during these sessions, lend a hand to lighten the emotional, social, and physical burdens we and our kids face.

I have been a PSG volunteer for four years and treasurer for the past three years at Brindavan. It has been fun, getting to know so many people, Often we see parents who are very depressed when they first come to attend PSG meetings. That's when they have just joined Brindavan. Then, as they attend meetings, interact with other parents and listen to the speakers, they realise they are not alone on this journey.
