To quote Mahatma Gandhi, “It is good to swim in the waters of tradition but to sink in them is suicide.” The argument generalising all traditions as barriers in the way of progress are severely flawed. Modernisation does not necessitate the complete abolition of customs. Traditions are meant to constantly evolve in order to meet the ever-changing requirements of society. They help foster a sense of unity, which leads to a harmonious society. Undoubtedly, there exist outdated traditions that are used as tools of oppression. Such archaic customs should definitely be done away with for they hinder society’s progress.
