Overview

Informal assessments, both educational as well as psychological are essential to help determine functioning levels of children in terms of academic skill areas as well as cognitive functioning.

An informal assessment apart from giving a clear idea of grade/age level skill functioning of a child also helps to determine the future course of action that needs to be taken in order to support him/her.

Assessments are conducted on a one-to-one basis. The duration of an assessment may take between 2 to 6 hours based on requirement, and in one or multiple sessions. A report of the evaluation can be collected 8-10 days after the assessment. This is followed by counselling the parents for follow up on the remedial programs and further referrals, if any.

Assessments at Brindavan are conducted by prior appointment only.

Our son Saiskandan experienced a learning challenge, the exact nature of which has not been identified so far. It manifested in two principal ways: Difficulty in reading and recall of what he had been taught or what he had learned.
We approached Brindavan when he was five years of age, to seek their guidance on how to help Saiskandan cope with his academic work.

The intervention by Brindavan comprised extensive conversations with him and an assessment that was carried out every year. The assessment tested whether his reading comprehension ability, to construct sentences of his own and math skills were age appropriate. The assessment helped us evolve ways of supporting him in his education.

Given the limited resource room support in the school, the assessments at Brindavan enabled us as parents to help him cope with the curricular demands of the school. The assessor used those assessment sessions to also identify the learning related anxieties that he suffered from as well as the lack of self-confidence that was holding him back. That in turn helped us evolve an approach to parenting that we may not have thought of in the absence of the inputs from those sessions.

Over the last twenty odd years I have learnt much not from books but from the children, parents and teachers who have given me a new value of each one’s life, individuality and purpose. Those who cannot speak communicate the clearest I feel and those who cannot win marks win hearts. Each day is new and each person is a gift to us.
